The riots which started off among ethnic groups on June 8th in Maungdaw Township quickly spread through Rakhine state to Sittwe culminating in the United Nations and other INGOs evacuating their personnel from the area.

According to unofficial reports inside Burma, over 50 villages have been burnt down and several people have been killed while many others are missing. Although a state of emergency has been in place, the violence has continued, the people continue to be exposed to grave danger and the death toll is growing. Moreover, the state media is accused of being one-sided while reporting on the current conflicts there.

Information received shows the dire and urgent need for immediate protection and humanitarian aid from the international community to stop the violence.

This press conference will be a discussion on how the international community can be involved and further information about the current situation.

Panel will be followed by a Q and A.

Speakers will be:
Mr. Maung Maung Gyi, Former Secretary General at 1990 election representative, AFPFL (Anti-fascist Peoples Freedom League)
Ms. Debbie Stothard, Coordinator , Altsean-Burma
Mr.Maung Kyaw Nu, President, Burmese Rohingya Association in Thailand

Moderator:
Mrs. Chalida Tajaroensuk, Director, People's Empowerment Foundation
