Mobs ransacked a mosque and assaulted houses owned by Muslims in Pegu division’s Zigon today as the country continues to reel from the spread of sectarian violence.

According to one witness who spoke on the condition of anonymity, a mob of over 100 people came out on the streets around 3am today and vandalised a mosque and houses in Zigon.
Police were allegedly at the scene when the mob began to destroy property, but did little to restrain the crowd.

According to the local, the police did very little other than ask the mob not to set Muslim-owned properties on fire.
Earlier this week, authorities announced the imposition of a curfew under article-144 in three other Pegu division towns Gyobingauk, Oakpho and Minhla after mobs targeted Muslim communities in the areas.
Sectarian violence has continued to spread across Burma’s heartland after rioting kicked off in Meikhtila last week, claiming 40 lives and displacing more than 12,000 people in central Burma.          Credit-DVB.
